Indian gooseberry is known as amla in Hindi. It belongs to Euphorbiaceae family. It is very nutritious but taste is sour. According to Ayurveda  gooseberry balance the three dosha  vata, kaph and pitta of body and storehouse of good health
Flavones and anthocyanins are found in Indian gooseberries  beneficial for health.  Rich in fiber , antioxidants and vitamins.Indian   Gooseberry is on the top of superfoods . Small in size but large in health benefits.

Eye care

Carotene in Indian gooseberry keeps eyes healthy. Eating regularly keeps eyes away from itching, redness and improve eye vision.
 
Hair care

Acts as natural hair conditioner. Improve blood supply of scalp, therefore, prevent hair fall, premature graying of hairs , and dandruff.
We use amla oil for hair massage.
 Use amla powder with henna for hair pack.
2 teaspoon of amla powder with 2 teaspoons shi kak ai powder mix with 2 teaspoon yogurt form a paste apply on the hairs. Wash with a mild shampoo after 15 minutes.
 
Skincare

Due to anti-aging effect keeps skin wrinkle free and glowing. Drink amla juice with honey in the early morning.
Amla juice simply used as face mask leave it for 30 minutes and wash with water.
Take few pieces of papaya mix with amla paste and honey. Make a paste and apply on the face. Leave it for 15 minutes and wash with water.
Amla scrubs for dry and normal skin
Amla powder with tamarind pulp and message on the face. After 15 minutes wash with water.
 
Chronic diseases

Reduce cholesterol so control raised blood pressure. Improve insulin production helps in diabetes management. Drink amla juice regularly.

  Effects on other systems

Digestion

It’s dried powder with honey stimulates appetite. Due to laxative properties removes the toxins from the body. Alkaline nature of  it strengthens the digestive system.
Drinking one glass of juice before a meal helps to eat less and increase metabolism. You may add it in weight management plan. Due to fiber content  relieve constipation.
 
Infection

Potent  antioxidants agent  so it reduces free radicals in the body. Free radicals are responsible for wrinkles and aging and some cancers. Protect the body from oxidative damage.
 
Common cold

Take 2 tsp of dried amla powder with 2 tsp honey 3-4 times in a day for quick relief or eat one amla per day for prevention of cold.
 
Mouth ulcer

Mix amla juice with water and gargle for two times in a day.
 

How to use Indian Gooseberry ( amla)?

 
Amla juice

Indian gooseberry is available from November to April. Get proper health benefits of it by drinking fresh amla juice in the morning. Mix 20-30 ml of juice with water and for taste add some lemon juice.
In diabetes
Mix juice with Jamun or Indian blackberry or Kerala juice to control diabetes.
 
Dried amla

Deseed the amla and sprinkle salt on it then keep it for drying  in the sunlight. After complete dehydration put in a dry jar and use it.
 
Amla pickle or murabba

Make spicy achar or murabba by keeping in sugary syrup.
 
Amla jam

1 kg gooseberry
½ lemon juice
1 kg granulated sugar
400 ml water
 
Put amla, lemon juice and water in a pan  bring to boil then simmer for 15 minutes until fruit becomes soft and pulpy. Put the sugar and gentle heat until sugar dissolves. Boil for 15 minutes it becomes red hue. Cool it and check with a finger if it will wrinkle up means jam prepared otherwise boil for another 5 minutes. After cooling put in a dry sterilized jar and seal it. Put in a cool place. The jam will good for 6 months.
